Thanks for the information. Question: if I want to have class recordings where I’m teaching using Powerpoints, can I just record a gotomeeting, or adobe? Or is there a better one to use?

Thanks!

Hey Tyler, just some clarification – the primary difference between dynamic and condenser mics are that condenser mics require a battery or “phantom” power due to the design of their electro-magnetic diaphrams. Condensers are typically more “sensitive” and have better high-end response. Dynamics require no phantom power and are better at handling higher sound pressure (volume) levels. Either type will work fine for voice recording. In regards to background noise, what you need to pay attention to is the pickup (polar) pattern of the mic element. The typical terms are “Omni” which is equal pickup from all directions, “Cardioid” which has rear or “off axis” rejection (good for reducing room noise). There are also Hypercardioid and Figure 8 patterns. In the interest of reducing background room noise, it is important in a cardioid-hypercardioid setting that the sound be coming from the direction opposite your voice (which is why sound proofing a wall and then speaking into it’s direction helps isolate the voice). The other thing is common-sense…if you’re in a loud environment and it is too much….try a different quieter location.
